Assignment Evaluation

Evaluation

The target audience for our Vox Pops is middle aged adults.  The stories reported relate to them, for example our Vox Pops contained stories about immigration and political themes.

Audio is used in our news bulletins to add interest. We attempted to add sound beds and effects to the sound, however this was not successful. We attempted to make the voicer more professional with attributes such as audio.

We chose to do a vox pop on the topic of immigration because it is a popular debate which will raise discussion. Most people have strong views on this subject therefore responses will be strong and not short one word answers.

The hardest thing about producing a voice piece was cooperating with college students as not many are willing to discuss topics when being recorded.

We tried to make our scripts and audio follow the conventions of news. We made our script fairly formal and fast paced. The audio was formal as we asked the people in our vox pops to speak slowly and clearly which follows a convention similar to those in the news today.

I feel as though the research and voice piece for this assignment was successful, however I was not overly happy with the finished editing on the vox pop and voicer. The editing did not sound as professional as i had hoped. This is because the software used was new and the task was more about getting used to the software rather than producing a successful professional outcome as I was a beginner with the software. Next time I hope that I can improve the editing skills with experience.

Assignment 1- Task 1

Assignment 1- Comparing Bulletins- Task 1

Bulletins are different from station to station. This is because they cater to different audiences. For instance capital FM caters to the younger audience and reports stories such as celebrity news and social networking etc. It sounds different as its more upbeat with news beds used and less formal style.
Radio solent on the other hand is much more formal without the jingles or news beds. Radio solent reports on stories catering to the more mature audience reporting news on politics and news events.

Capital FM is a contemporary hit radio station. This radio format is targeted towards teens and young adults in their early 20s. This is because the style of music (often repeated top hits) and the adverts used relate to this age range. The presenters tend to use humour to appeal to the audience and an informal feel with loads of soundbeds of upbeat music. The content of the radio news  also has to appeal to this target audience. It has to include local news to appeal to the area of the listeners and it has to be relevant to the interests of the average listener.  I listened to a Capital FM 2 minute radio news broadcast. The overall style of the bulletin was upbeat and fast paced. It contained sound beds of upbeat music. The types of stories in the bulletin were relevant to the target audience. The news was relevant to the local area as it is Capital South Coast, including football news featuring previous southampton football club player Gareth Bale and the musical 'Wicked' coming to Southampton. It also included a death of sir David frost which happened on a Southampton cruise ship. The bulletin included the capital jingle and a short clip of popular chart music within this. The bulletin included a wrap with a clip of a politician. All the stories were treated using audio. The end of the bulletin included upbeat music and jingles which appeals the the age range and audience of a contemporary hit radio station. This bulletin was much louder and upbeat in comparison to the other 2 bulletins mainly because it included sound beds throughout.

BBC Radio 2 is an Adult Contemporary radio station targeted towards middle aged listeners.
This is because the overall style of the radio is more formal, with a wider range of music and generally interesting to that age range. There tends to be little or no audio used in the news bulletins. I listened to a 5 minute bulletin from BBC radio 2. The bulletin opened with a simple jingle. The overall style of the bulletin was formal, simple and to the point but longer as it has much more news content. There were no sound beds used behind the voice of the newsreader. The news content was relevant towards the target audience, including stories which will appeal to them. The bulletin opened with a news story on Barack Obama & military action against Syria. It included a wrap with a clip of opinion, this is a soundbite. This story included facts and figures about the deaths caused. This would not be interesting to listen to on a contemporary hit radio station. The bulletin included no soundbeds or jingles within the clip. This appeals to the target audience of the radio station. The bulletins contents was mainly general copy, being the voice of the news reader with no sounds behind. The copy includes a voicer where the presenter crosses over to another presenter for further information on the subject. He then returns to continue the bulletin.

Wave 105 is a local radio station and the target audience is people in the area (the south coast). The bulletin I listened to was a 3 minute clip. The overall style of the bulletin was more upbeat and faster paced than the adult contemporary station previously described (Radio 2).
This bulletin included copy, soundbites, jingles, and wraps. Although the bulletin did not include sound beds, it still felt upbeat as it had an overall style similar of the contemporary hit radio station bulletin. The use of jingles emphasised this. The contents of the radio news was very similar to the other bulletins including the Barack Obama headline & the death of David Snow. The headline included clips and wraps, which adds interest and credibility to the story. This bulletin, like Capital South Coast, did include local stories including a man causing danger to drivers on the motor way & news on the Bournemouth Air Show.

Story Treatment

News Radio

Bulletins are different from station to station. This is because they cater to different audiences. For instance capital FM caters to the younger audience and reports stories such as celebrity news and social networking etc. It sounds different as its more upbeat with news beds used and less formal style.
Radio solent on the other hand is much more formal without the jingles or news beds. Radio solent reports on stories catering to the more mature audience reporting news on politics and news events.

Stories are reported in different ways to add impact. This is Story Treatment.

Copy- This is where the only voice you hear is the newsreaders. It is a story with no audio attached to it .
Clip- This is where you hear a sound bite from another person, who isn't another reporter. It may be part of an interview.

Wrap- This is where you hear the news reader, followed by a clip, then back to the newsreader.

Vox- This is where a story is enhanced by public opinion. It adds interest to a story involving the audience to interact.

Voicer- This is where the newsreader crosses over to someone at the scene with more expert knowledge on the particular subject e.g. our sports reporter has more.
